Curb appeal, kitchen + bath design, and flooring can make or break a home sale. If you're looking to invest in an upgrade, whether you're planning to sell now or later, a new study has revealed the biggest home improvement and design trends on TikTok and Instagram, and how they can increase the value of your home by more than $125K. Hot tip: Do it now so you can enjoy the fruits of your labor before you hand off the keys to a new buyer!
The research, by the British find-a-tradesperson platform Rated People, analyzed 800,000 home improvement jobs on its platform, as well as TikTok, Instagram, and Google data to uncover the trends. They then interviewed more than 2,000 potential property buyers, who shared how much extra they’d pay for a property if it had each of these trends.
“Many of the 20 biggest home improvement and design trends could be achieved for less than $100 and a bit of DIY, which could see you make a nice profit if you’re looking to sell," said Adrienne Minster, CEO at Rated People. "If you’re keener to tackle a bigger job like building a kitchen pantry or laying a herringbone floor, or if you just want that professional finish on a paint job, we’d recommend using a skilled local tradesperson to help bring your home improvement plans to life."
Check out the top 20 home decor trends that are making buyers swoon.
Trend 1: Herringbone Floors
Herringbone floors are the hot trend by far with more than 72 million views on TikTok as well as almost 100,000 hashtags on Instagram and 40,000 annual Google searches. In fact, buyers would be happy to pay around $6,600 more for a home if it had a herringbone floor in its interior. The classic pattern takes a bit more labor as precision is key but the look is timeless, beautiful and just a little bit Old World European.
Trend 2: Outdoor Kitchens
The pandemic ushered in a renewed focus on outdoor spaces that act as second homes in warmer climates (for the ultimate staycation in your own backyard!). This second top trend could add on $6,812 to your home's property value; regardless, you'll enjoy it for many summers to come.
Trend 3: Living Walls
Living walls coming in at third could boost a home’s value by $6,308. Bonus: they can help purify the air, regulate a room's temperature, and elevate your mood.
Trend 4: Green Kitchens
Green kitchens also give off an earthy, elevated vibe while maximizing a property’s value by $6,406.
Trend 5: Home Offices
Home offices are the big trend since WFH became a way of life. Turn a closet or extra bedroom into a home office for your needs or your need to sell.
Trend 6: Vintage Furniture
Coming in at #6 is vintage furniture. While furniture isn't often part of the sale, it can create an authentic and cozy first impression vs. the stark contrast of super modern furniture.
Trend 7: Dark Kitchens
Moody kitchens are taking over the bright white ones that have dominated for the last decade. We love the mix of natural colors and rich jewel tones.
Trend 8: Neutral Decor
Neutral decor is like a breath of fresh air. It feels clean yet warm, minimalist yet cozy. A neutral palette also has universal appeal when it comes to attracting more buyers.

Trend 10: Wall Paneling
We love this two-toned look for adding architectural detail to a standard room.

Trend 13: Flagstone
This popular paving stone is perfect for walkways and patios and has an organic feel that buyers love. Expect an increase of more than $6K in your property value.
Trend 13: Painted Arches
Younger buyers on Tik Tok gravitate toward cool interpretations of this hot paint trend. Find colors you love and make an affordable statement in any room.
Trend 15: Color Blocking
Color blocking is another popular paint trend, and with fresh tones it can add on $5,725 to your home's value.
Trend 16: Green Walls
Green is the new grey. Pair it with neutral decor and lots of plants and you have an inviting space that buyers dream about.
