Does Halle Bailey have music in The Color Purple?
Yes, Halle Bailey recorded new music for The Color Purple! In a pre-strike interview with Cosmopolitan, Halle explains why these new roles in The Little Mermaid and The Color Purple mean so much to her. "I consider myself a musician, a singer, first, so this [acting] world is kind of new for me," she says. "I feel like I'm able to paint a beautiful picture of a character that's lived in my heart for a long time. With The Color Purple, I was more than excited to join, especially hearing that it would be a beautiful musical adaptation where I get to incorporate my love of music — I actually got to write an original song for the film as well, so I just can't wait because it's a combination of all the things that I love."
David Alan Grier also talks about how the producers on the film brought in contemporary composers to write additional songs for the film in an interview with The Talk. "They wanted to expand it, also bring in a younger audience," he says. "I thought it was a great choice."

Is The Color Purple a true story?
The Color Purple is not a true story. But, even though the story is fictional and the characters might not have really lived, the world in which Alice Walker sets the novel was *very* real. A lot of the plot and the topics covered, like assault, violence, and substance abuse, affected people in the early 1900s — and still affect people today.
