"The Morning Show" Season 3 Costume Designers On Their Favorite Looks And Working On "Legally Blonde"

There's a good chance we're all familiar with both local morning shows and national ones, but leave it to Apple TV+ to totally shake up our understanding of the programs. The Morning Show (which stars television icons Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon) premiered in 2019 and takes a new (albeit fictionalized) behind-the-curtain look at the people who help wake us up, and the ins and outs of their lives. The Morning Show season 3 just premiered, so here's everything you need to know about the new show — as well as an exclusive interview with the costume designers.

Our Interview With The Morning Show Season 3 Costume Designers Sophie De Rakoff and Beth Lancaster

\u200bJulianna Margulies and Reese Witherspoon the morning show season 3

Welcome to our series Playing Dress Up, where we talk to the minds behind some of our favorite film and TV costumes. From fantasy looks that take our breath away to iconic outfits you can recreate from your own closet, these designers do it all.

B+C: Congrats on The Morning Show season 3! In recent years, there have been so many conversations about power dressing in the workplace. How did your designs push the boundaries of what's traditionally expected in a work setting?

SDR: Obviously we've had decades now of female anchors, and there's a trajectory from the degender dressing in the seventies moving into power dressing in the eighties, and then the nineties and the two thousands. There's room now for a much more traditionally feminine point of view. The anchors now have a choice. So with Bradley and with Alex, it's about the choice of who they choose to be as anchors and what power means to them. So for both of those characters, it really was bucking against the norms of the familiar color sleeveless dress that...we consider morning news anchors to wear today. And so they have the power to make their own choices with their own palette and their own silhouettes.

BL: Yeah, for a character like Stella who comes into the workplace and very much dresses as an individual, she comes out of a Silicon Valley background. She's been brought into this world. She didn't rise up through the ranks in this world. She very much comes in with her own perspective. You look at the way that she's dressing and the way that her clothes are constructed, and it is almost in a way, deconstructed office wear...but it's also elements of streetwear. She's definitely got a perspective with her. You have to look at her from head to toe: it's her sneakers, it's her footwear, it's everything there.

In terms of the anchors, I wanted to just throw in Chris, who's a new character this season as well, who's played by the lovely Nicole Beharie, she's interesting as well because she comes in a little bit softer than the other two. She's got a little bit more of the traditional sheath dress look, but she's very colorful. She brings those pops of color, but she also comes from a sports background. She's a track star. So she really brings in a lot of that element, the very sporty, sportif kind of color palette. Really, really super poppy colors. And that is a strength in her own way.

B+C: Do both of you — and the actors you dress (like Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon) — have any favorite looks from the season?

BL: I mean, yes, they certainly do have favorite looks. I love all of those Sacai looks.

SDR: Me too.

BL: All of those Sacai looks are killer. I mean, it's so hard, there's so many. We can't pick a favorite!

SDR: And I love the burgundy on burgundy [custom Lafayette 148 suit] that we made for Reese, for Bradley, as part of her new anchorwear look. I think that's really, really strong and it's nice to see that change in her anchorwear.

B+C: Sophie, I know you've worked with Reese before, and so I cannot pass up the opportunity to ask you a Legally Blonde question! Is there anything that would surprise readers about creating Elle's wardrobe with her?

SDR: I mean, it was over 20 years ago, and Reese and I were both in very different points of our career back then and [it was] much more about starting out. But what has not changed is the collaborative process between us. I think the part of the logistics of how we work has changed with experience over the years, but our collaborative process is pretty much the same as it was 20 plus years ago, but now we've moved it into a TV format as made adjustments for that, for streaming as opposed to features.
