Whether you're figuring out how to trim your own bangs or looking to give yourself a whole new color, there is no better time than summer to try out a new 'do. From crazy colors to sophisticated cuts, the summer hair inspo for 2023 is all about what *you* love, and about making a bold statement that doesn't hold back.
Summer Hair Colors
Jet black is glossy, classy, and looks good with literally everything.
Pull an Ariel by dying your hair a vivid shade of red. To maintain your color, wait a couple of days after getting it dyed, then wash with cold water.
There are a couple different routes you can go if you want rainbow hair. Dye from root to tip for a vertical rainbow, or go horizontal around your whole head.
The great thing about this mahogany shade is that it's fun, but it looks almost natural... which makes it a great middle ground for people who don't like crazy hair shades but want to experiment.
"We tend to shift a little lighter in the spring and summer but in general, brunettes want to be brunette and aren’t seeking a huge shift toward highlighting," Shvonne Perkins, Master Colorist at Madison Reed, says. "Adding warmth gives reflection and radiance without literally going lighter."
Purple might be our favorite hair dye color, and this dark ultraviolet is bold enough to turn heads — yet it's super chic.
Gray blending is an excellent way to let your natural hair shine, instead of trying to hide it. "Seeing some grays pop through your base color can look like babylights that you didn’t have to work for or pay for," Perkins says. "Many people find that after seeing a little blend of gray, they are craving an overall lighter, softer look with less maintenance. It might surprise you!"
Rocking orange hair doesn't mean you have to look like a traffic cone. Even toned down a bit, burnt orange hair still stands out from the crowd.
One of the reasons Perkins loves color blocking is that it accentuates your cut and adds a bold edge to any look. "It’s a refreshing way to add dimension," she says. "We are still feeling the 90s and early 2000s styles and this bold color placement is a call out to that. While still being a bit bolder with shape and tone, it’s a great trend to grab on to!"
Summer Haircuts
Taper haircuts are a perfect example of the fact that you don't have to have long hair to still look amazing. This is also a great way to let your accessories take center stage.
Long bobs look good straight, wavy, or curled, and depending on your hair type, you can either get the ends thinned out or go for a blunt chop. Long story short, it looks good on everyone.
Long layered haircuts are kind of like a modern take on The Rachel haircut from Friends. Layered, voluminous, and just the right amount of old school.
According to celebrity hairstylist Clariss Rubenstein, the shaggy bob is a cut you should definitely have on your radar. "The beauty of the shaggy bob is the low maintenance and minimal styling," she says. "I love an air-dry cream for this look [and] depending on hair length and thickness add a dime to a quarter size of cream to clean damp hair, comb through, tousle and done!"
Summer Hairstyles
Peekaboo braids are a great way to add some color and detail without adding an actual extra layer to your hairstyle.

By pulling out little pieces on each braid, butterfly braids will add some fun and whimsy to your beauty routine. They look amazing both on their own and when they're added to other braided styles.
A sleek bun or ponytail is exactly the kind of upscale yet relaxed hairstyle that will elevate any look. "Whether I’m running errands or doing something glamorous, it's such a classic, feminine look," Rubenstein says. "A shiny pomade is your best friend here...Run through dry hair and smooth with a natural bristle brush and go!"
Bohemian knotless braids feature curls hanging out of each loc, which adds a ton of beautiful visual detail and makes for a great date night look.
Braids are a super easy way to add something to your hair, and if you switch it up (a braided pony, Dutch braids, French braids), you'll get a totally different look every time.
We'll always take a cue from Zendaya, and '90s mermaid hair is definitely on our radar this summer. Sleep with your hair in braids or take your straightener and move it back and forth (like in this YouTube tutorial) as you go down each section.
"Give me a Bardot-inspired look with a 90’s girl twist any day," Rubenstein says. "As an infrequent washer I also love a style that works on dirty hair." Just add your favorite dry shampoo, run a 1.5-inch barrel curling iron through it, and toss everything up except a few face-framing pieces.
